Doosan Arena, formerly known as Stadion ve Štruncových sadech, is one of the most important football stadiums in the Czech Republic. Its history dates to the 1950s, and it officially opened in 1955. The stadium was originally built as part of the extensive Štruncovy sady sports complex, in picturesque surroundings at the confluence of the Radbuza and Mže rivers near Plzeň’s historic centre. At the time, it became the home ground of Spartak Plzeň, the predecessor of today’s FC Viktoria Plzeň.

The stadium’s early years were marked by modest conditions and the gradual development of its infrastructure. Its original capacity was higher than today because much of the ground consisted of standing terraces. In the decades that followed, the stadium hosted football as well as other sports and public events. Its facilities gradually became outdated, however, and by the end of the twentieth century the need for modernisation was increasingly clear if it was to meet the requirements of professional sport.

At the turn of the millennium, as Viktoria Plzeň gradually returned to the Czech football elite, it became clear that the old stadium no longer met the demands of modern football for either players or spectators. A major reconstruction therefore took place in 2011. The project was delivered primarily with support from the City of Plzeň and principal sponsor Doosan Škoda Power, after which the ground was renamed Doosan Arena.

The reconstruction transformed the ground into a modern, multifunctional football stadium with a capacity of approximately 11,700. Particular attention was paid to spectator comfort and safety, as well as high-quality facilities for players and coaching staff. The new stadium includes covered stands with comfortable seating, VIP areas, high-quality dressing rooms, a press centre and modern floodlighting suitable for evening and international matches.

Today, Doosan Arena is the centre of football in Plzeň and one of the Czech Republic’s most modern stadiums. It hosts FC Viktoria Plzeň’s home fixtures as well as numerous international matches, including UEFA Champions League and Europa League games. The ground is known for its intense atmosphere and devoted supporters, who regularly create a memorable setting for their team.

Beyond football, Doosan Arena is used for other sporting and cultural events, including concerts and charity events. Thanks to its central location and modern facilities, it remains an integral part of life in Plzeň and a symbol of the city’s football success at home and abroad.

The stadium therefore embodies both Plzeň’s rich sporting history and its dynamic modern development, during which FC Viktoria Plzeň has become one of the country’s most successful clubs and Doosan Arena an inseparable part of that success.
