DESCRIPTION:

Müngersdorfer Stadion was built on the site of a former military fortification that had to be dismantled after the First World War. It opened on 16 September 1923 with a capacity of 80,000. During its first reconstruction in 1974–1975, it became the first stadium in Germany to be fully covered, but delays to the work caused the city to lose the opportunity to host matches at the 1974 World Cup. During the second reconstruction, from December 2001 to July 2004, one of the four stands was demolished and rebuilt while the stadium remained in operation. The project cost €119,500,000.

Several matches at the 2006 FIFA World Cup were played here.

Several matches at UEFA Euro 2024 were played here.

Today, RheinEnergieStadion is home to 1. FC Köln.

The stadium’s total capacity is 50,000, including 41,206 seats, all of them covered, and 9,168 standing places, all of them covered. Its capacity for international matches is 40,590.

Interesting facts

The stadium hosts American football as well as association football. Cologne is represented here by the Cologne Centurions, who compete in Europe’s counterpart to the American NFL.

In 2005, the International Olympic Committee awarded Cologne’s RheinEnergieStadion a bronze medal in a global competition featuring 93 stadiums and sports venues from 25 countries.

The stadium also hosts concerts, with capacities ranging from 35,600 to 60,000.
